Join the Fun at Wilmington’s Most Innovative Camp
Search for ospreys, beavers and snapping turtles at the DuPont Environmental Education Center. Row on the Christina with the Wilmington Youth Rowing Association. Play and learn in the Delaware Children’s Museum interactive exhibits. Set sail on the Kalmar Nyckel ship and perform gun drills with a cannon replica. The Riverfront Discovery Camp on Wilmington’s Riverfront offers all this and more, June 25-29. The camp is geared to “tweens,” ages 8 to 12.
The camp is a partnership between the Wilmington Youth Rowing Association; Delaware Children’s Museum; Kalmar Nyckel, the tall ship of Delaware; Delaware Nature Society, which operates programming at DuPont Environmental Education Center (DEEC); and Riverfront Development Corp. of Delaware, which owns DEEC.
“I’m excited about our second year of offering this unique camp,” says John Harrod, manager of DEEC. “The riverfront is rich in natural and cultural history and a fantastic place for youth to learn and play. Each partner organization has developed an exciting and innovative curriculum. It should be a camp week that kids will never forget.”
“Tweens” ages 8 to 12 crave hands-on activities and novel experiences. The Riverfront Discovery Camp earns a thumbs-up in both respects. At DEEC, campers will use nets, microscopes and binoculars to explore the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge. At the Wilmington Youth Rowing Association, campers will learn the ins and outs of rowing in indoor rowing tanks before heading out in teams on the Christina River.
Pick up and drop off for the Riverfront Discovery Camp is at the Delaware Children’s Museum. Camp hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; the camp fee is $325. Aftercare from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. is available for $50 a week. Campers must be able to swim to take part in the rowing program.
