Wilmington Firehouse Mural Complete

The Delaware Center for the Contemporary
Arts is pleased to announce that the mural
on Wilmington Firestation #1 has been completed.
This is the fourth mural project since 2002
facilitated by the Wilmington Mural Arts
Collaborative, a partnership between the DCCA,
The City of Wilmington and Howard High School
of Technology. The mural is a tribute to the
New York City firefighters, 9/11, fire safety
and the Wilmington Fire Department.
The area residents and community groups and
schools began planning the mural in Spring
2006 and gave input into the concept and design.
Photographic documentation of historical
Wilmington firehouses and trucks were incorporated
into the mural by Wynnewood, PA muralist,
Max Mason. Over 200 volunteers including students
and adults worked on the mural for the past several
months under Mason’s direction. The official
unveiling of the mural will take place in October,
which is Fire Safety Month. The mural is on the
east side of the station that is located at West
at 2nd Streets and can be seen from MLK Boulevard.
This program is made possible, in part, by grants
from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state
agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the
arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National
Endowment for the Arts.  Other funding and support
