DELAWARE THEATRE COMPANY Receives 2008 Barrymore Awards
WILMINGTON, DE - OCTOBER 7, 2008 - Delaware Theatre Company's 2008 production of Yasmina Reza's 'Art' was recognized for scenic and lighting design at the 2008 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, held Monday evening, October 6. Beowulf Boritt was honored with Outstanding Set Design, while Joshua Schulman was awarded for Outstanding Lighting Design.
"We at DTC are thrilled that such talented designers as Beowulf and Joshua were recognized," says DTC's Artistic Director Anne Marie Cammarato. "This Barrymore Award is a wonderful recognition of our work and validates our place in the greater Philadelphia theatre community. As a professional regional theatre, we strive to be one of the notable award-winning theatres in this nation, and this award secures our place in that group."
Philadelphia's theatre event of the year, the Annual Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre is the region's only comprehensive theatre awards program, recognizing artists for excellence and innovation while serving to increase awareness of the richness of the local theatre community. Over 100 productions produced by the Philadelphia region's professional theatres are reviewed by the Barrymore nominating committee. Barrymore Awards are presented to honor excellence in acting, design, choreography, music, education, community service, and lifetime achievement.
In addition to 'Art', Beowulf Boritt has designed Mary's Wedding, The Glass Menagerie, Talley's Folly, and A Delicate Balance at Delaware Theatre Company. His Broadway credits include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, LoveMusik, Jay Johnson: The Two and Only. Off-Broadway: The Last Five Years, The Other Side, Saint Lucy's Eyes, Hank Williams: Lost Highway, Romeo and Juliet, Miss Julie, Emergence-see! (The Public Theater), Everything's Turning Into Beautiful Roar, The Accomplices (The New Group), In a Dark, Dark House, Spain, The Wooden Breeks (MCC Theater), Wonderland (The American Place Theatre), Richard III, Cherry Orchard (The Pearl Theatre Company), 2007-08, and 2008-09 Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. 2007 Obie Award for sustained excellence in set design.
Joshua Schulman has a Masters of Fine Arts from Boston University. He has designed lighting for such companies as Flashpoint Theatre Company, Media Theater, City Theatre Company, Straw Flower Productions, Azuka Theatre, The Tribe of Fools, Theatre Exile, the Dance Theatre of Pennsylvania, Lantern Theater Company, Eternal Spiral Project, Theatre Simpatico, and Madhouse Theater Company.
