WORK ETHIC AND MORE STRESSED BY FORMER FOOTBALL STARS
The Delaware Sports Museum & Hall of Fame recently presented an after school program of African American football history in Delaware at the Claymont Library.
The speakers included Anthony Anderson (Temple University and Pittsburgh Steelers), John Land (Delaware State University and Philadelphia Bell) and Ron Whittington (University of Delaware). Anderson and Land are inductees in the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame.
After discussing their personal triumphs on the football field and those of other great African Americans from Delaware, the major theme of life after retiring from the game was stressed. The former players discussed with students (4th grade to high school) how the lessons of work ethic and time management learned while a student athlete in college became critical tools to their successes when their playing days ended.
Anthony Anderson, a member of the 1979 Super Bowl Steelers owns a successful construction firm based in Greenville. John Land was an educator, a regional manager for the Xerox Corporation and is now acting President of the Board of Trustees at Delaware State University. Ron Whittington is retired from a long administrative and teaching career at the University of Delaware and is well known for his presentations of African American history throughout the region.
