New and Improved Riverwalkers Program Launched

The Riverfront Development Corporation of Delaware has launched a new and improved Riverwalkers Program for the Wilmington Riverwalk.  Originally created in 2002, Riverwalkers is a Riverfront Wilmington program that encourages regular walking to promote better health and fitness, all while enjoying the beautiful Wilmington Riverfront.  Using a one-mile course on the Christina River’s scenic Riverwalk, the program rewards participants who achieve a goal of at least 30 miles during a six-week period.  Once participants reach this goal, they will be eligible for a prize.

A second aspect to the program is the Riverwalkers Corporate Challenge.  Each team will consist of no more than 15 people, and teams will compete against other teams on a per capita basis.  All teams must use the Riverwalk to log their miles.  There will be four separate Riverwalkers challenges, each lasting six weeks.  The team with the most miles logged in that period, on a per capita basis, will be the winner of a prize.

A third aspect, which is brand new this year, is the Riverwalkers Family Challenge.  It is structured in the same way as the Corporate Challenge, but instead of a corporate team, a family would create a team (of three to six people each, with at least one being under the age of 18) and would compete against each other the six-week period, for a prize.

The Riverwalkers Challenge Time Periods are:

#1: May 23 – July 3

#2: July 4 – August 14

#3: August 15 – September 25

#4: September 26 – November 6

As part of the new Riverwalkers Program, Nemours Health & Prevention will be installing quarter-mile markers along the Riverwalk so that participants are able to easily track their mileage, and which have healthy lifestyle tips on each one.

Riverwalkers prizes include four (4) round-trip tickets to New York City or Washington DC courtesy of Amtrak, Blue Rocks tickets, Riverwalkers t-shirts, Riverfront Wilmington hats, Nemours tote bag, family memberships to the Delaware Nature Society, and River Taxi wine cruises.

Sponsors of the Riverwalkers Program include Nemours Health & Prevention, Amtrak, Riverfront Market, Wilmington Blue Rocks, Riverboat Queen, and Molly’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream & Deli.
