Nemours, the town in France represented by Pierre Samuel duPont as a member of the Estates General in 1789, was chosen by Alfred I. duPont as the name for his beautiful 300-acre country estate north of Wilmington, Delaware. Here he created a lovely home with landscaped gardens surrounded by natural woodlands. Also on this land is the unique and important Alfred I. duPont hospital for Children.

The mansion contains one hundred and two rooms and is furnished with fine examples of antique furniture, rare rugs, tapestries and outstanding works of art.

The mansion and gardens are open for tours between May and November. Tour groups are kept small and include expert commentary by guides familiar with the duPont family history. Their knowledge of the time period in which the estate was built allows the visitor to experience the ambience of the house. Tours take a minimum of two hours and include a guided tour through a series of rooms on three floors, followed by a bus tour through the gardens and surrounding grounds. Tours conclude with a visit to the chauffeur's garage where the family's antique cars are on display.
