See the museum's magnificent collection of American antiques celebrating the best in style and craftsmanship. Stroll through the galleries and see objects related to America's heritage. Delight your senses with a walk through the glorious garden and surrounding landscape of hills, waterways, and rolling meadows. Families will love the Touch-It Room, where children may learn about early American life through hands-on displays, as well as Enchanted Woods, a three-acre garden designed by the "fairies".
Winterthur is the former country home of Henry Francis duPont (1880-1969), who was born here and, in his own words, "always loved everything about it." A connoisseur's connoisseur, two of his primary passions were early American decorative arts and horticulture. The museum and garden visitors see today grew from these interests. In addition, during his lifetime Winterthur was a self-sustaining country estate, home to more than 200 people and to a world-renowned dairy operation.
